Bubble Trouble

Level Summary

Bubble Trouble is a Hunt level introduced during Season 5. The level requires the player to collect a certain amount of bubbles before other players to qualify. The level is split into 5 sections with different obstacle setups in each. 2 sections at any one time can spawn bubbles for players to collect. Sometimes a gold bubble will spawn worth more points in a particularly difficult position.

Bubble Trouble originally was intentioned to be a series of small King of the Hill style areas in which players tried to stay in a specific zone in order to score points, but had pivoted away to the current setup due to not having a great sense of player interaction of solid second to second gameplay.

Initial Development

  • As part of initial development I had outlined some designs that prioritised ways for the level to push players away out out of a zone, or gave players ways to get into a zone.  Later I prototyped many of the ideas in engine then narrowed down to ones for wider playtesting

  • Experimented with different ways for the score zones to behave such as shrinking as the score was siphoned out or by moving around the activated area

Switching the core goal

  • Decision to pivot the gameplay to individual score points represented as bubbles, which allow players more chance to effect each other and players are encouraged to move about in the space more.

  • Editing or replacing sections to better fit the new bubble based gameplay

Player Movement

The shape of arena and placement of turntable was to best show off the changing active areas and allowing players to better reach those areas quicker. The game would feel a lot slower if players had to walk between each one. Players can effectively see all areas and which ones are currently active by the glow underneath them.
